Every nursing book has a section dedicated to this.

We love Saunder’s so we’ll be using that book (7th edition) to review. A great review is chapter 6 page 44. By the way today you can buy the book for $56.42.

One other side note is Saunders lets you pick content areas and create tests so you can review. So some good stuff.

Advance Directives

This topic is covered on page 53. There are two basic types. One is Instructional directives – it list treatments that the client may or may not want, like DNR (there is a lot of good information about the DNR in that section). The other is a durable power of attorney for health care – that allows the client to choose someone to make decisions for them, when they can no longer do so.

As a nurse it is important that we always Advocate for our client. We want to make sure they know information about the directive, when a patient is admitted we need to review / ask to see if they already have an advance directive. We need to make sure th HCP knows any directives.

It is important we follow those directives.

Client Rights are discussed on pages 47-48
Informed Consents – page 49-50
Confidentiality – Page 50-53
Legal / Ethical – 44-47
